Success оr victory: a comparative analysis of the notional components of the concepts VICTORY and SUCCESS

The notional components of the concepts VICTORY and SUCCESS in the English-speaking construal of the world are in the focus of the paper. The purpose of this work is to examine the concepts of VICTORY and SUCCESS from a linguistic perspective and determine their notional components. The object of this research is the concepts VICTORY and SUCCESS. The subject of the study is the lexical meanings of lexemes victory and success, considered to be the names of the corresponding concepts. The study of the lexical meanings of the lexemes victory and success, which are the names of the corresponding concepts VICTORY and SUCCESS in the English worldview, makes it possible to identify and explain the common and distinctive features of the notional components of these concepts. The concept of VICTORY, verbalized by the lexeme victory, implies a positive result of activity inherent in the military sector and competition, which is explained by the etymology of the key lexeme, namely the primary recorded meaning “military supremacy, victory in battle or a physical contest”. Modern dictionaries record several meanings of this lexeme, which we combine into 6 lexico-semantic variants, profiled against the background of the domains competition, military, achievement, and emotion. The concept of SUCCESS, verbalized by the lexeme success, implies a positive result of activity not limited to the military sphere or competition, and is based on the etymological development of the key lexeme with the first recorded meaning “result, outcome, termination of an affair”. The identified 5 lexico-semantic variants of this lexeme are profiled against the background of the domains achievement, result, well-being/prosperity and recognition. Therefore, we can say that victory can be considered the achievement of a goal by overcoming resistance of various nature, achieving a desired, positive and final result, accompanied by positive emotions. Whereas success is a certain result of activities aimed at achieving recognition and well-being, an achievement that may not fully meet the goal and does not necessarily have a positive connotation.
