Abstract

Academic writing covers a variety of genres, from research papers and essays to thesis and conference presentations. The analysis of the results of the introduction of English academic writing at Poltava V. G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University confirms the importance of this course as a mandatory component in the curricula for teaching Bachelor's and Master’s philology students. The purpose of the academic course "Academic writing (English)", which is studied by Master’s philology students, is to develop students' abilities and skills in writing texts of various academic genres in English through mastering the strategies and techniques of essay writing, studying the languages of academic texts, learning the style and vocabulary of modern professional communication. The results of the observation and students’ surveys about English academic writing have revealed the following benefits of studying foreign language academic writing for philology students: students develop the skills of writing texts of various academic genres, which are the key for their educational and professional activities, improve their foreign language communicative competence, improve research and critical thinking abilities, develop communication, social, leadership, organizational and creative skills. It fosters a research culture and a sense of academic integrity while providing students with the tools for detecting and preventing plagiarism. Academic writing and academic integrity are integral aspects of research in higher education. The inclusion of academic writing as an educational component of philology students training is important for the promotion of ethical practices in professional activities at the national and international levels.
