US President’s State of the Union Address as a ritualized type of political discourse

This article is dedicated to a diachronic analysis of the State of the Union Address as a genre-specific form of ritualized political discourse, whose pragmatic and linguo-stylistic characteristics undergo transformations under the influence of socio-political contexts. Drawing upon Heorhii Pocheptsov’s typology of speech acts, the authors establish that constatives, directives, and commissives predominate in the Presidential addresses. The conducted analysis indicates an evolution of communicative strategies from the 18th to the 21st century. In the first State of the Union Address of 1790 by President George Washington, which serves as the invariant model of the analyzed genre, retrospective evaluations, directives, and promises prevail. Conversely, in the addresses of modern American Presidents, including George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joseph Biden, the emphasis shifts toward prospective plans and emotive assurances. The syntactic and lexical structures of the texts also undergo significant modifications: the proportion of conversational elements and figurative language increases, while complex constructions give way to simpler ones, thereby enhancing the accessibility of the Address for a broader audience. The speech acts used also exhibit evolutionary changes: directives become more explicit, while the use of quesitives – designed to prompt reflection and interaction from the audience – intensifies significantly. The conducted linguo-stylistic analysis reveals a tendency of refusing from the formal style in favor of a more colloquial and expressive register, which facilitates the convergence of ritualized political discourse with everyday communicative practices. This shift contributes to strengthening the emotional connection between the President and U.S. citizens, making the State of the Union Address more personalized. The preservation of the genre’s invariant structure alongside its dynamic modifications demonstrates its adaptability to expectations of the American society, ensuring the effectiveness of this form of ritualized discourse in political communication.
