Using TED-Ed videos for developing listening skills in medical students

Abstract

In teaching receptive skills, in particular listening, video texts play an important role. The article examines the effectiveness of using TED-Ed video materials in the process of teaching English to medical students, in particular, using the video «A day in the life of an ancient Egyptian doctor». The purpose of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of using short videos on the TED-Ed platform to improve listening skills in medical students, as well as to develop methodological recommendations for teachers. The study is based on an analysis of existing publications and scientific research, and also includes a practical aspect through the development of a lesson plan using TED-Ed videos, which comprises tasks before, during and after watching the videos that contribute to the actualization of learned vocabulary and the development of listening skills. The article applies modern methods of teaching foreign languages and the principles of active listening. The article offers a new approach to the use of educational video materials, especially in the context of medical education, and demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating videos into the process of teaching listening comprehension. In addition, the specifics of working with videos depending on the level of students’ training are revealed. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the identification of specific approaches to the use of multimedia content in medical education, which contribute to the formation of key communication skills.The use of TED-Ed video materials helps improve listening skills and increases the level of engagement of students. The study indicates that the integration of TED-Ed videos into foreign language classes for future specialists in the field of medicine not only increases the interest of students, but also develops their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which is an important aspect of the formation of professional competencies.
